Ye Ai's Biography

Ye Ai, Assistant Professor, Singapore University of Technology and Design

Dr. Ye Ai is currently an Assistant Professor at Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) since 2013. He obtained his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (China) in 2005 and his Ph.D. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Old Dominion University (USA) in 2011. Prior to joining SUTD, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Bioscience Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory from June 2011 to January 2013. He was a visiting professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology from August 2014 to July 2015. His research interest focuses on developing novel microfluidic technologies for particle/cell manipulation and single cell analysis. He has published more than 60 peer-reviewed scientific papers in leading international journals including Physical Review Letters, Science Advances, Lab on a Chip, Nanoscale, Biosensors and Bioelectronics, Analytical Chemistry and Microsystems & Nanoengineering.

Sebastien Clerc works as a Technologies & Market Analyst, Microfluidics & Medical Technologies, within the Life Sciences & Healthcare division at Yole Developpement (Yole). Sebastien authored a collection of market and technology reports covering the following topics: microfluidics, point-of-care, MEMS for healthcare applications and connected medical devices. Hao He's Biography

Hao He, Professor, Shanghai Jiao Tong University

Dr. Hao He is currently a professor in Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China. He received his B.Sc. in 2006 from the University of Science and Technology of China, and Ph.D in 2010 from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He then worked as an associate professor in Tianjin University since then. Since 2014, he joined the School of Biomedical Engineering in Shanghai Jiao Tong University. His research focuses on biophotonics using femtosecond lasers.

Dr. Han Wei Hou is currently an Assistant Professor at the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. He received his BEng (First Class Hons) and PhD degree in Biomedical Engineering at the National University of Singapore in 2008 and 2012, respectively. Upon graduation, he did his postdoctoral training at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and subsequently joined LKCMedicine at NTU as the inaugural LKCMedicine Postdoctoral Fellow in 2014. Yanyi Huang's Biography

Yanyi Huang, Professor, Peking University

Dr. Yanyi Huang received his BS (Chemistry) and ScD (Inorganic Chemistry) degrees from Peking University in 1997 and 2002, respectively. He then conducted his postdoc research at Caltech (Applied Physics, 2002-2005) and Stanford (Bioengineering, 2005-2006). He started his independent career at Peking University in 2006 as a Principal Investigator and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2009, and Professor in 2013. He is Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, Principal Investigator in Biomedical Pioneering Innovation Center (BIOPIC), Principal Investigator in Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Genomics (ICG), Principal Investigator in Peking-Tsinghua Center for Life Sciences, and an Adjunct Professor of Analytical Chemistry.

Seiichi Ishida, Section Chief, Division of Pharmacology, National Institute of Health Sciences

Seiichi Ishida is Section Chief at Division of Pharmacology at National Institute of Health Sciences. He received his PhD in Pharmaceutical Science from the University of Tokyo, Japan in 1993, and conducted postdoctoral studies at The Cancer Institute (Tokyo) and at Howard Hughes Medical Institute at Duke University Medical Centre. His research focuses primarily on the development of in vitro cell assay platform for the evaluation of drug metabolism and drug induced liver injury and their application to the regulatory science field.

Akihiro Isozaki, Researcher of Kanagawa Institute of Industrial Science and Technology (KISTEC) and Research Assistant Professor, University of Tokyo

Akihiro Isozaki received his B.S. in mechanical engineering from Meiji University in 2006, and his M.S. in mechano-informatics from the University of Tokyo in 2008. From 2008-2010 he conducted studies at Panasonic Corporation prior to receiving his Ph.D. in mechano-informatics from the University of Tokyo in 2014. He then conducted postdoctoral studies in the Department of Chemistry of the University of Tokyo until 2019 and took his current position as an assistant professor in the same year. He is currently engaged in the development of novel high-throughput cell sorting devices and their application.

Ken-ichiro Kamei, Associate Professor, Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences (WPI-iCeMS), Kyoto University

Ken-ichiro Kamei is an Associate Professor and Principal Investigator at WPI-iCeMS, Kyoto University, where he joined as a faculty member in 2010. He obtained his doctorate in Engineering from Tokyo Institute of Technology in 2003. During 2003-2006, he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Molecular Biology Institute, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). In 2006, he was promoted to Staff Research Associate at the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI), UCLA (along with Prof. H. R. Tseng). He has developed microfluidic platforms for the phenotypic analysis of human PSCs and in vitro cancer diagnosis. His current research interests focus on the development of "Body on a Chip" platforms to recapitulate in vivo physiological conditions by integrating micro/nano-technology and stem cell biology.

Ryuji Kawano's Biography

Ryuji Kawano, Associate Professor, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology

Dr. Ryuji Kawano is an Associate Professor at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (TUAT). He received his Ph.D. in 2005 from Yokohama National University, and then he spent 3 years in Prof. Henry S. White's lab. at the U. of Utah, where he conducted research on nanopore measurements. He then joined Prof. S. Takeuchi's group at KAST and U. of Tokyo, where he carried out research on the construction of durable lipid bilayer systems using microfabricated devices. Since 2014 he worked as an associate professor at the present university. His current research interests include molecular robotics based on synthetic membrane proteins, DNA computing, and nanopore technology based on microfabricated technologies.

Dr. Hiroshi Kimura graduated with a PhD in bioengineering from the University of Tokyo in Japan, and with postdoctoral degrees from Institute of Industrial Science (IIS), the University of Tokyo (Supervisor: Prof. Teruo Fujii). Currently, he is an associate professor at Tokai University since 2012. Jan Lichtenberg, Ph.D., is Co-Founder and CEO of Swiss- and US-based InSphero Inc., the largest supplier of 3D cell-culture products and services for pharmaceutical customers worldwide. InSphero patented assay-ready 3D microtissues mimic the structure and functionality of organ tissue, e.g. liver, pancreas, or tumors including disease states like diabetes or NASH. The 3D microtissues allow for more predictive and reliable compound profiling for discovery and safety testing in a highly robust, rapid and cost-efficient way. Jan co-founded InSphero in 2009 and grew the company to 50 employees in Switzerland and the US while expanding the business to encompass all top 15 global pharmaceutical companies. Prior to InSphero, Jan had VP R&D and Product Management positions at Hocoma AG (medical robotics) and Uwatec (microelectronics). Jianhua Qin, Professor, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences

Jianhua Qin is currently the Chair Professor at Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP), Chinese Academy of Science (CAS), where she has served on the faculty since 2007. She is also the joint professor at CAS Center for Excellence in Brain Science and Intelligence Technology, and Institute for Stem Cell and Regeneration, CAS. Her research interests include the engineered living systems with healthy and diseased organ functions for biomedical applications, by combining microfluidics, stem cell biology and medicine. She obtained her M.D. from China Medical University, and Ph.D in Chemistry from CAS, with a visiting professor in the University of Hong Kong and University of Toronto. She is a Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) and the Associate Editor of Lab on a Chip.

Terry Riss's Biography

Terry Riss,Global Strategic Marketing Manager Cell Health,Promega Corporation

Dr. Riss received a PhD in Cell Biology from the University of Illinois in 1978 in the field of mammary gland biology. He did postdoctoral work at the University of Texas Medical School developing bioassays to study breast cancer. Dr. Riss moved to the Biotechnology division of Schering Plough in 1988 to develop interleukin/cytokine bioassays to support IND filings. Dr. Terry Riss started the Cell Biology program at Promega Corporation in 1990 where he has held several R&D and Project Management positions. Dr. Riss managed development of cell viability, cytotoxicity, apoptosis, and protease assay systems and lead efforts to promote multiplexing of cell-based assays to determine the mechanism of cell death. Dr. Riss now serves as Global Strategic Manager, Cell Health involved in outreach educational training activities. Dr. Riss serves as a co-editor of the NIH Assay Guidance Manual.

Tatsuya Shimizu's Biography

Tatsuya Shimizu, Director and Professor, Institute of Advanced Biomedical Engineering and Science, Tokyo Women's Medical University

I am now director & professor of Institute of Advanced Biomedical Engineering and Science, Tokyo Women's Medical University (TWMU). I graduated from Faculty of Medicine, the University of Tokyo and got medical doctor (M.D.) in 1992. After two-year clinical training, I made a specialty of cardiovascular medicine including catheterization and got Ph.D in 1999. After that, I moved to TWMU and started the research of tissue engineering based on "cell sheet technology". Cell sheet technology have been applied to clinic for several types of regenerative therapies and to 3D tissue fabrication for future advanced therapy and drug screening. My recent work is engineering thick vascularized tissues, 3-D tissue model systems for heart, liver and kidney, additionally, automatic tissue fabrication system.

Ryo Sudo's Biography

Ryo Sudo, Associate Professor, Keio University

Ryo Sudo worked on liver tissue engineering and received his PhD from Keio University in 2005. He then worked on vascular tissue engineering as a postdoctoral researcher. In 2006, he moved to Massachusetts Institute of Technology in USA to be a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Biological Engineering, where he worked on 3D tissue engineering using a microfluidic device. In 2009, he joined the Department of System Design Engineering, Keio University in Japan as an Assistant Professor. He has been an Associate Professor since 2012. His laboratory focuses on the application of microfluidic systems to in vitro tissue engineering. Specifically, he is interested in elucidating engineering principles for the integrity of multi-cellular 3D systems composed of liver, vascular, neural, and cancer cells in the context of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

Shiyang Tang, Vice-Chancellor's Postdoctoral Research Fellow, School of Mechanical, Materials, Mechatronic and Biomedical Engineering, University of Wollongong

Dr. Shiyang Tang currently is a Vice-Chancellor's Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Wollongong, Australia. He received his PhD in Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) from RMIT University, Australia in 2015. He joined Pennsylvania State University, USA, as a postdoctoral research fellow from Aug 2015 to Jul 2016, working on surface acoustic wave enabled microfluidic platforms. Later he joined the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), USA, as a postdoctoral scholar from Aug 2016 to Feb 2017, working on droplet-based microfluidics for point-of-care diagnosis. His research interests include developing microfluidic platforms for biomedical studies and liquid metal enabled micro-/nanoscale platforms. He is the named author for more than 55 papers published in many high-impact journals, including PNAS, Nature Communications, Matter, Advanced Materials, Advanced Functional Materials, Small, Analytical Chemistry, and Lab on a Chip. The outcomes of his works have been highlighted in many world-known science magazines, such as Nature, RSC Chemistry World, New Scientists, Science Daily, Physics Org, Nanowerk, Material Views etc.

Yu-suke Torisawa, Associate Professor, Hakubi Center for Advanced Research, Kyoto University

Yu-suke Torisawa is Associate Professor at the Hakubi Center for Advanced Research and Department of Micro Engineering at Kyoto University. He received his PhD in Chemical Engineering from Tohoku University, Japan in 2006, and conducted postdoctoral studies at the University of Michigan and at the Wyss Institute at Harvard University. Kevin Tsia, Associate Professor, Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, The University of Hong Kong

Kevin Tsia received his Ph.D. degree at the Electrical Engineering Department, at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), in 2009. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and the Program Director of the Biomedical Engineering Program, at the University of Hong Kong. His research interest covers a broad range of subject matters, including ultra-fast optical imaging for imaging flow cytometry and cell-based assay; high-speed in-vivo brain imaging; computational approaches for single-cell analysis. His pervious researches, such as energy harvesting in silicon photonics and the World's fastest optical imaging system, have attracted worldwide press coverage and featured in many science and technology review magazines such as MIT Technology Review, EE Times and Science News. He received Early Career Award 2012-2013 by the Research Grants Council (RGC) in Hong Kong. He also received the Outstanding Young Research Award 2015 at HKU as well as 14th Chinese Science and Technology Award for Young Scientists in 2016. He is author or coauthor of over 180 journal publications, conference papers and book chapters. He holds 3 granted and 4 pending US patents on ultrafast optical imaging technologies. He is a co-founder of start-up company commercializing the high-speed microscopy technology for clinical diagnostic applications.

Ryuji Yokokawa, Associate Professor, Department of Micro Engineering, Kyoto University

Ryuji Yokokawa is an Associate Professor at Department of Micro Engineering, Kyoto University, Japan, and a Visiting Researcher at RIKEN Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research (BDR), Japan. He received his Ph.D. degree in Department of Electrical Engineering from The University of Tokyo in 2005. He was a visiting student in Prof. C.J. Kim's group, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, University of California, Los Angeles (2000-2001) and a visiting scholar with Prof. S. Takayama, Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Michigan (2011-2012).

He has authored or co-authored more than 70 peer-reviewed journal and 120 conference papers, 1 book chapter, and has 5 patents issued or pending. He has served as a technical or organizing committee member in international conferences including Transducers, MicroTAS, IEEE NEMS, MEMS, Sensors and NANOMED.

Haruka Yoshie,Application Specialist,CELLINK

Haruka is a graduate of Bioengineering from McGill university in Canada. Her main research focus has been analyzing the physical and mechanical properties of the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition during cancer metastasis.

Haruka joined CELLINK as a scientific applications specialist due to her interests in cell-substrate interactions in 3D manufactured tissues. She hopes to help develop the emerging field of bio-applications in the 3D manufacturing space, and the roles of materials in the mechanobiological aspects of cell pathology.
