An exclusive post-conference workshop offering attendees the chance to better understand the management of agent networks

Workshop leader: Vanessa Vizcarra, Senior Mobile Financial Services Specialist, IFC

This workshop focuses on the complex tasks surrounding Agent Network Management Training.  These tasks include:

  • Structuring a network, building it over time
  • Designing agent incentives
  • Recruiting and training agents
  • Monitoring progress
  • Liquidity management
  • Evaluating and modifying the network as appropriate

There are over 140 live mobile money initiatives in the world today, few of these have been able to achieve scale, and one of the primary reasons for this is the lack of know how around how to build, manage, and incentivize agent networks - yet agents are the primary interface between mobile money service providers and their clients.

This training, targeted at mobile financial service providers, goes through an overview of existing distribution models, key factors for success, and the steps to design a well-functioning agent network. The training describes lessons that have been learned by more traditional distribution channel players and those being learned now by mobile money providers. It also contains brief case studies on approaches adopted by several mobile money implementations around the world used to build their agent networks. The training will be conducted by Ms. Vanessa Vizcarra, Senior Operations Officer, IFC Retail Payment Institutions and Innovations.

Ms. Vizcarra has 16 years’ international professional experience and 11 years’ experience in development & microfinance to provide access to finance for the base of the pyramid. In her most recent position as Channels Director of Accion, she was responsible for leading alternative delivery channels projects in financial/microfinance institutions with the aim of allowing them to grow their product offer (savings, loans, remittances) through the usage of branchless banking. Before Accion, she spent more than 10 years at Microfinance International Corp, including a position as VP General Manager, Latin American office. She has also served as Project Manager - African & Europe corridor, Msystems, London and Senior Consultant -Latin America, London Consulting Group.
