Philipp Adelhelm

Philipp Adelhelm is a professor for physical chemistry at Humboldt-University Berlin. His current main interest is research on sustainable batteries. After studying materials science at the University of Stuttgart, he moved to the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces in Potsdam (department of Professor Antionetti / Smarsly, 2005-2007) for his doctoral project. This was followed by a 2-year postdoctoral stay at the University of Utrecht (Professor de Jongh) and then a position as a junior research group leader at the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Justus Liebig University in Giessen (Professor Janek, 2009-2015). From 2015-2019 he was a professor at the Institute for Technical Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. He has been a professor at the Institute for Chemistry at Humboldt-University since 2019, and heads a joint research group on operando battery analysis at the Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin (HZB).

Parvin Adeli
Nickel Institute

Parvin contributes her expertise to ensure the benefits of nickel in lithium-ion batteries are well understood. With extensive experience in the field of energy storage, she has made significant contributions to the area of solid electrolytes through her fundamental knowledge in inorganic material synthesis and its application to both Li-ion and Na-ion energy storage devices. Prior to joining the Nickel Institute, Parvin held a prestigious postdoctoral fellowship with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) where she worked on energy storage material formulation and optimization particularly on solid-state batteries (SSB) and composite electrolyte materials. She also led the NRC portion of the collaborative project ‘AI driven design and development of SSB electrolytes for consumer electronics’. Parvin holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in Materials Science & Engineering and Chemical Engineering. She also completed a 3-year teaching program at the University of Waterloo’s Centre for Teaching Excellence and has held various council positions in policy-making meetings at the Department and Faculty level at the University of Waterloo. Parvin is based in the Nickel Institute’s Toronto office.

Holger Althues studied chemical engineering and received his doctoral degree in inorganic chemistry at the University of Technology Dresden in 2007. Since then he is working at the Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology in Dresden, Germany. In 2008, he became a team manager for the chemical surface technology group and his team was transferred into a division with 3 sub-groups in 2015. In his position as division manager he administrates various projects in the area of film deposition techniques, electrode processing and energy storage applications. His main research topics are materials and surface technologies for high energy secondary batteries. A recent focus is on material and electrode development for lithium sulfur and solid state battery cells.

Shunsuke Amagai

Shunsuke Amagai, Co-CEO of Beff, has almost 15 years of experience in lithium-ion battery R&D and manufacturing in the automotive industry. Prior to founding Beff, he was an engineer and project leader at Mercedes-Benz AG from 2016 to 2022 and at Nissan Motor Corporation from 2009 to 2015. Nong Artrith (http://nartrith.atomistic.net) is a tenure-track assistant professor in the Materials Chemistry and Catalysis Group at the Debye Institute for Nanomaterials Science. Prior to joining Utrecht University, Nong was a Research Scientist at Columbia University, USA, and a PI in the Columbia Center for Computational Electrochemistry. Nong obtained her PhD in Theoretical Chemistry from Ruhr University Bochum, Germany, for the development of machine-learning (ML) models for materials chemistry. She was awarded a Schlumberger Foundation fellowship for postdoctoral research at MIT and subsequently joined UC Berkeley as an associate specialist. In 2019, Nong was named a Scialog Fellow for Advanced Energy Storage. She is the main developer of the open-source ML package ænet (http://ann.atomistic.net) for atomistic simulations. Rakan Ashour

Rakan is a senior engineer at Koura (an Orbia Business). He currently leads technology and product development of graphite anode materials at Koura. Prior to that, he was a scientist at Boston Metal, developing and scaling up processes for valuable metals extraction from industrial waste through molten oxide electrolysis. Rakan holds a PhD in Materials Science from the University of Rochester.

She is specialised in modelling, control and machine learning algorithms and has extensive experience in energy storage systems, li-ion batteries, battery management as well as electric vehicle powertrain. Mona has been endorsed as Future Promise in this field by the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2021. She was the recipient of the TechWomen100 UK award in 2021, and recognised as WMG early career researcher of year for 2022. Mona's research on the application of AI for li-ion battery manufacturing was selected to receive the postdoctoral research excellence award in 2022 and put her in the shortlist of the IET Sir Henry Royce achievement medal.

In addition to battery technical audits, Dr. Hayes conducts engineering audits for processes such as consumer electronics assembly, printed circuit board assembly (PCBA), chemical etching, injection molding, and metal casting and forming. Roland Matthé is Technical Fellow for Battery Systems and Manager for electrification architecture at Stellantis (Opel Automobile GmbH). Since 2018 his main subjects of work are battery refrubishment methode development, battery failure analysis, battery durability andsafety. From 2011 to 2018 he had been heading the battery system leadership team, overseeing the future strategy for automotive battery systems, research results and field experience from current battery systems. From 2007 to 2011 he had been leading the development of the VOLTec Lithium-Ion battery system for Opel Ampera and Chevrolet Volt at the General Motors Technical Center in Michigan, USA. Since 1997, he held various position in GM’s fuel cell team, leading system engineering group, fuel cell system component development and future fuel cell system architecture definition. After joining Adam Opel AG in 1989 he worked on electric vehicle development and battery integration for the Opel Impuls electric vehicles gaining experience with all types of automotive battery systems. Roland Matthé received his “Diplom Ingenieur” title (master’s degree) in electrical engineering from the Technical University of Darmstadt in 1989.

Venkataraman Thangadurai

Dr. Venkataraman Thangadurai is full professor of chemistry at the University of Calgary, Canada. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, United Kingdom. He received his BSc from Sacred Heart College in Tirupattur, India in 1989 and his MSc from Muthurangam Government Arts College in Vellore, India in 1991. He received his PhD from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India in 1999 and did his PDF at the University of Kiel, Germany. He received a prestigious PDF fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Bonn, Germany. Dr. Thangadurai received his Habilitation degree from the University of Kiel in 2004 and started his independent career in Calgary in 2005. He received the prestigious Keith Laidler Award from the Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC) in 2016 for his outstanding contributions to physical chemistry. His current research activities include discovery of novel ceramic membranes and mixed ion and electron conductors for all-solid-state batteries, solid oxide cells, and electrochemical gas sensors.

Michael Tormoen is the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Systems Integration Technical Lead for Daimler Truck’s entrant into the SuperTruck 3 project. He is responsible for the technical requirements of a fuel cell and its supporting systems as applied to a North American long-haul truck. This third iteration of the SuperTruck project funded by the US Department of Energy is aimed to deliver the heavy truck of the future with a minimum of 600 miles of zero-emission loaded range. Prior to joining Daimler Truck in 2023, Michael was the technical lead for electric and electrified powertrain development programs with Roush, developing alternative energy propulsion solutions for a wide variety of vehicles and industries. He led electric vehicle systems integration programs in the commercial vehicle, fully autonomous, hydrogen fuel cell, and high-performance segments. Alwin Tuschkan works for AVL as a Project Manager at the IODP Department, the so-called Integrated and Open Development Platform. In this role, his mission is to improve the vehicle and powertrain development processes together with cross-department teams at customers and AVL. After studying Aeronautical Engineering at the Technical University of Munich, in 2012 he joined the AUDI AG in Ingolstadt, Germany, where he worked in several positions. He started as a development engineer and project manager in the predevelopment of vehicle and mobility concepts. Tom Van Bellinghen joined Umicore in 2009 as the Marketing & Sales Director taking care of Umicore´s Rechargeable Battery Materials business. Working out of the Umicore HQ in Brussels, he divides his time between Belgium and Asia. In 2012 he became also responsible for raw material purchasing before becoming the VP Marketing and Sales in 2018. Since 2019 he’s focusing his time on managing the relationships with OEM’s worldwide and the global marketing responsibility for the Umicore rechargeable battery materials. After working with primary resources, she shifted her focus to secondary materials in 2018 with lithium-ion battery recycling, creating her own research project with a main focus on graphite recovery. Her passion and dedication to this research field led her to pursue a PhD at the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg and Aalto University, where she successfully defended her dissertation in 2022. Kurt Vollmacher is educated as fire officer and fire prevention engineer. 10 years ago, he had the idea (dream :-)) to generate crucial information in a uniform standardized way for first and second responders worldwide irrelevant of the used type of technology or means of transport. With 35 years of active duty at the fire services, he has seen a lot. It is extremely complicated to be aware of every new change. As the technical evolution goes quite fast, this is why a lot of responders are struggling to stay up to date. So, he started drawing at his home the draft plans of ISO 17840 parts 2, 3, 4 and the upgrade of part 1. In order to realize his dream, he went to become project leader at ISO of the ISO TC22 Road Vehicles Rescue information project. During this period, as a member of the SAE Hybrid and EV 1st and 2nd Responder Task Force, he has helped to create the published SAE recommendations J2990, J2990/2, J3108. Nowadays, Kurt is still working on the project in collaboration with UL until the worldwide uniform way of responder information is established.

Dragoljub did his chemistry studies in Bosnia and Herzegovina followed by a Master of Science in advanced materials in Grenoble and Darmstadt as part of the ERASMUS Mundus program. At TU Darmstadt Dragoljub finished his Ph.D. in 2018 on silicon-based anode materials and continued his career as a postdoc in the battery field. In 2019 he joined Mercedes-Benz Car Group as an expert in silicon-based anodes and helped establish lab activities for cell development and testing. In 2020 he took responsibility as a project and technical lead for the development of a high energy cell. Dragoljub currently leads the anode expert group responsible for anode development @ Mercedes. Dragoljub successfully established technology partnerships on the subject of new silicon material with two world-leading material suppliers to support his anode development work. Apart from work, Dragoljub enjoys spending his free time with family (two sons and wife) and friends. He enjoys mountains, hiking, and biking. Furthermore, he likes farming (driving a tractor) on his parent’s farm in Bosnia. At Daimler Truck Dragoljub is responsible for the in-house development of Lithium-ion cells.

Marcel Weil

Dr.-Ing. Marcel Weil finished his Ph.D. in 2004 at the Technical University of Darmstadt (IWAR-Institute). Since 2007, he has been a scientific Group Leader in Systems Analysis and Constructive Technology Assessment (CTA) for Emerging Technologies at the Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis (ITAS) of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), and is a Principal Investigator for the German Helmholtz Technology, Innovation and Society program. Since 2011, he has headed a second working group at the Helmholtz Institute Ulm for Electrochemical Energy Storage (HIU), and also belongs to the Resources, Environment and Sustainability branch of KIT.
